New School Policy

So this year we have a new school policy. It states that if you miss eight full days or higher then you automatically fail. It doesn't matter if your making a 100 in this class. It's excused and/or unexcused. Now, last years school policy was that if you missed six full days that you would get an appeals form. An appeals form is something you got to put all your absences down and to put why you missed those particular days. The school had also let you make up your time lost with something called Afterthoughts. Afterthoughts was when you had missed a day and you scheduled an hour after school to make up a certain period. You'd be okay then. But now, they have taken that privileged away from you. You can still get an appeals form this year but they won't be as lenient on you, so watch out. Now the procedure is not so simple after you have missed eight whole day. They will run your case through the court system and then you will have to go to court. The system has also changed this year for students through the court system. Not only would the parent get arrested, but so would the child. I do not know how long but it is through the juvenile court system.
Opinions? I this too harsh, or do you think this is just the right thing to do?
